FC Barcelona brought in several new players to strengthen their team over the last summer transfer window, but one could argue that the backline is one area of the team that has been left a little weakened, especially because of the unexpected departure of Inigo Martinez, who was one of the most important players in the Blaugrana team last season.
In that context, the Catalans are once again looking at the market, and one name high on their agenda is Marc Guehi. According to Fichajes, Crystal Palace are prepared to sell the 25-year-old centre-back in January for a fee close to €20 million, with his current contract set to expire in the summer of 2026.
For Barcelona, securing a defender of Guehi’s quality at such a price would be considered a bargain. The England international has been one of the most consistent centre-backs in the Premier League, admired for his anticipation, recovery pace, and physical strength.
His profile fits perfectly with what Hansi Flick is demanding: a ball-playing defender who is quick and reliable in one-on-one duels. However, financial fair play remains the biggest obstacle. Barça sporting director Deco is already working on different formulas to create the necessary margin and make the signing possible in January.
However, Barcelona are not alone in their pursuit. Both Liverpool and Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on Guehi’s situation. Crystal Palace do not want to risk losing him for free further down the line, and competition from other European giants could drive the price higher.
Even so, sources close to the player, as per the report from Fichajes, suggest he is keen on Barça’s project, with the style of play and the potential role he could have at Camp Nou particularly appealing to him.
If negotiations move quickly, Guehi could become Barcelona’s first signing of the winter window, bolstering a defensive line that urgently needs depth after the sudden and unexpected departure of Inigo Martinez ahead of the decisive 2nd half of the 2025/26 season.
