With only a few months remaining on his contract, Robert Lewandowski’s time at FC Barcelona has become a major topic of discussion.

For quite some time now, it has been widely suggested that the 37-year-old veteran striker would be moving on in 2026, with there being no plans for a renewal.

However, things seem to be shifting in the background, with Barça no longer ruling out offering the Polish striker a one-year extension.

Laporta meets Pini Zahavi

Amidst all the growing speculation, Carlos Monfort of SPORT now reports that a high-level meeting between Pini Zahavi, Lewandowski’s agent, and Barcelona president Joan Laporta took place last Saturday.

The meeting, which lasted around two hours, was held in the presidential suite of one of Barcelona’s most prestigious hotels to avoid outside attention. Among other topics, the future of the Polish striker was discussed.

Zahavi conveyed Lewandowski’s intentions to Laporta – that the forward intends to remain at the club for one more year. He feels fit and motivated to continue at the club.

In addition, the striker’s wife has several business projects in the city, a factor that reinforces the player’s personal and family ties to Barcelona.

Barcelona not in a hurry to decide

However, Lewandowski’s future will not be decided in a hurry, as Barcelona consider it too early to make a decision and not something to assess by Matchday 17 of La Liga.

In addition, the Catalans need more time to analyse the market and identify the team’s needs.

Moreover, Barcelona prefer to wait to see how Lewandowski performs during the most decisive phase of the season.

The Blaugrana also trust that a striker of Lewandowski’s calibre will once again be decisive and deliver performances in line with previous seasons, in which he posted outstanding tallies of 33, 26 and 38 goals.

That level of output is what the club expect, especially given his status as one of the highest earning players in the squad.

As such, Lewandowski, who is set to miss the Copa clash vs Guadalajara, will be assessed match by match.

It is true that his departure would create a significant salary margin, but Barça are also aware that having a player of his profile provides great value both on the pitch and in the dressing room. For that reason, the final decision has been postponed until a later stage.
