Barcelona are actively pursuing a deal to sign Athletic Club star Nico Williams, who has impressed at the European Championships for Spain.

As reported by Florian Plettenberg, Barca have made the forward a top target for the summer transfer window. President Joan Laporta and new manager Hansi Flick are in agreement that they want Williams playing for the club next season.

Nothing is at an advanced stage, with the Spanish giants needing to sell first and generate more income to fund the move. Despite this, club officials believe the player’s €58m release clause is good value for money and they do not want to miss out on this market opportunity.

Laporta declared on Monday that they could afford to sign the 21-year-old, however they must act fast if they want to secure his signature, as there are many other clubs interested in this deal. The likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Bayern Munich are closely monitoring the situation and could rival Barca by activating the release clause.

The dynamic winger is currently fully focused on Euro 2024 and is not getting distracted by rumours about his future. Meanwhile, his agent is in constant dialogue with the interested parties. Any move for the player will have to be sealed before August with Williams aiming to have his future resolved as quickly as possible so Athletic Club have enough time to find a suitable replacement.
