FC Barcelona’s activity in the recently concluded summer transfer window was somewhat restrained due to financial constraints, which hindered their ability to secure their preferred targets.

Although the Catalan giants secured a marquee signing in Dani Olmo, the most anticipated move was the potential acquisition of Nico Williams.

The Spanish winger was high on Barcelona’s wishlist but their economic situation meant they could not submit a concretized offer.

Nico Williams did not reject Barcelona

Throughout the transfer window, the prevailing view was that Nico Williams was reluctant to leave his boyhood club or make the leap to Barcelona for that matter.

However, according to MARCA, Nico Williams rejected three clubs who wanted to pay his release clause this summer, with Barcelona not among them.

Nico Williams declined the opportunity to double his salary with clubs ready to pay his €58 million release clause, having all the necessary documentation and legal expertise.

And Barcelona, although interested and having made an informal offer, were not among those prepared to make an immediate payment.

The lack of assurances is what held up the move and saw the Basque winger pursuing continuity at this current club.

With Dani Olmo also sidelined in the opening matches due to registration issues, it is hardly surprising that Barcelona struggled to present a concrete offer.

Considering that Williams rejected a host of top sides, Barcelona may have a hat in the ring for his signature in the upcoming years, provided they can muster up the financial resources to realize his signing.

In any case, it is becoming clearer that Nico Williams may have ended up in Catalonia, had Barcelona been in a stronger position financially.
