Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal has extended his contract with the club until 2029.

With his previous deal expiring in June 2026, the 18-year-old has signed a new long-term contract, which will include a massive €500 million release clause.

Barca have continued their strategy of securing the futures of top-rated young talents, having previously tied Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, Gavi, Ronald Araujo and Pedri to long-term deals.

Bernal broke into the first team last season, but a devastating knee injury in August 2024 curtailed his progress.

He returned to action earlier this month after nearly a year-long lay-off and made an immediate impact by providing an assist in the 6-0 win against Valencia.

However, he has hardly featured in the following games, with manager Hansi Flick being cautious about his fitness. He views the Spanish prospect as a key player for the club’s long-term project.

Dubbed the heir apparent to Sergio Busquets, Bernal has showcased his incredible talent even with limited opportunities.

Bernal is an archetypal holding midfielder with excellent technical abilities. He excels at escaping pressure and setting the game’s tempo.

He boasts an impressive passing range and has the positional intelligence to protect the backline.

Bernal will get game time as the season progresses. Flick will rotate the squad to maintain the players’ fitness, and Bernal will hope to capitalise on his opportunities.

Barca are currently ravaged by injuries, with Raphinha, Gavi, Fermin Lopez and Joan Garcia sidelined.

The La Liga champions face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday.
