Barcelona have reportedly withdrawn from the race to sign Sporting CP’s prolific striker Viktor Gyokeres, according to Fichajes.
It is said that financial difficulties have forced the Catalan giants to step back from pursuing the 26-year-old Swedish star, who has caught the attention of several top European clubs, including Manchester United.
The Blaugrana’s interest in Gyokeres stemmed from their need to prepare for the future beyond Robert Lewandowski. While Lewandowski remains a crucial player for Barcelona, his advancing age has pushed the club to search for a younger, dynamic striker.
Gyokeres’ performances have made him one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe, but Barcelona’s current financial situation has made it impossible to compete for his signature.
Gyokeres has been in sensational form since joining Sporting from Coventry City in 2023. This season, he has already racked up 23 goals and four assists in just 18 matches.

Such remarkable numbers underline his effectiveness in front of goal and make him an attractive option for top clubs across Europe. His performances for the Swedish national team further bolster his reputation as a reliable goal-scorer.
As reported before, it is expected that Sporting might ask for a fee ranging between €60-70 million for the striker, but if his demand continues to rise, the asking price may well and truly rise to €100 million.
While Barcelona have bowed out of the race, Manchester United are emerging as a strong contender to secure the Swedish forward.
Furthermore, despite Barcelona’s inability to compete financially, Gyokeres’ stock continues to rise. It seems likely that the Swedish star will take on a new challenge in one of Europe’s elite leagues, with Manchester United appearing to be in pole position to secure his services.
This marks another missed opportunity for Barcelona as they navigate the challenges of financial limitations while trying to rebuild for the future.
