Barcelona have confirmed the loan signing of Joao Cancelo from Al Hilal, hours after removing an earlier post when the move had not been finalised.
The club said in a statement that the Portugal full-back joins until the end of the season, will wear the number two shirt, and signed at the offices in the presence of president Joan Laporta, first vice-president Rafael Yuste, board member Joan Soler and sporting director Deco.
Barcelona have sought defensive cover this month and opted to bring back Cancelo, who spent 2023-24 in Catalunya.
Barcelona, fresh from retaining the Supercopa de Espana in Saudi Arabia, visit Racing Santander in the Copa del Rey on Thursday. That may come too soon for Cancelo, who could instead target Sunday’s trip to Real Sociedad in La Liga for a second debut.
He did not play at Camp Nou during his previous loan because home games were staged at Montjuic. The Portugal international could make a first home appearance there on 25 January against Real Oviedo.
