This time last year midfielder Frenkie de Jong was being discussed as an almost certain departure, be it the summer of 2025 for a transfer fee, or in the summer of 2026 on a free transfer. Now it appears as if he will be going nowhere.

The Dutchman has had an up and down career with Barcelona, but the year of 2025 has seen him put together what many believe to be his best form since arriving six years ago. After declaring on the summer that he would be renewing his deal with the club, it now appears he will deliver on that promise.

Frenkie de Jong agrees new Barcelona contract

It had been reported on several occasions in recent months that Barcelona were keen to extend his deal for the next three years, keeping him at the club until 2029. Now Sport say that an agreement has been reached for that to happen. Their information is that negotiations have been swift and harmonious, allowing an agreement to be reached quickly.

Previously relations had been rocky between Barcelona and de Jong’s agent Ali Dursun, but after the Netherlands international turned to Sebastien Ledure, the deal was closed quickly. Both sides have already started exchanging documents, and already some of them have been signed, with President Joan Laporta and Vice-President Rafa Yuste yet to do so. The plan is for the agreement to be made official within the next week.

Change of status at Barcelona

While de Jong has almost always been a starter when fit at Barcelona, only of late has he received plaudits for his play. There is an argument that this is the first fully functioning team he has been part of.

In particular, Hansi Flick made it his mission to place de Jong at the centre of his plans alongside Pedri. Recently he described de Jong as ‘the heart of the team’, and has also revealed that he consults de Jong for his opinion on team matters.
