In the last few hours, Barcelona have taken the lead in the race to sign Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri. Talks have been opened with the 30-year-old’s representatives, while club-to-club negotiations have also taken place, and this means that the Catalans are now favourites ahead of arch rivals Real Madrid.

A few weeks ago, Barcelona started seeking out possible midfielder signings after discovering that Frenkie de Jong would be out for months after he suffered a serious knee injury during the 2026 World Cup. Their pursuit has not been a priority due to their continued push to sign Julian Alvarez and Joao Cancelo, but in Rodri’s case, they sense an opportunity after Real Madrid’s pursuit hit a wall.

Barcelona are seeking to reach an agreement on personal terms with Rodri, and once they do, they will submit their opening offer to Man City. As per Victor Navarro, they are willing to pay €60m to get a deal done now, rather than wait for his contract to expire next June.

Midfield is not an area that Barcelona had planned to address this summer, but with Rodri available, it makes sense to pursue a move if the finances are right. The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner would undoubtedly elevate Hansi Flick’s options in the centre of the pitch, and with the likes of de Jong, Pedri, Gavi and Marc Bernal, there would be a strong case to say that the Catalans have the strong midfield in world football.

The next few days will be crucial to understanding where Rodri will be playing his football from the 2026-27 season onwards. Right now, Barcelona are well-placed to get a deal done, and while there is a confidence that an agreement will be reached, it is not done yet.
