This past Monday saw Sergi Roberto officially become a free agent as his contract with FC Barcelona expired on June 30.

Although a one-season renewal has already been agreed and drafted between the player and the 32-year-old, it has not been possible to sign the documents due to the Catalans’ need to obtain financial fair play.

The youth academy player is therefore still on holiday and awaiting any movements that may take place at the club. In any case, his patience will not be unlimited and a key date may be 10 July, when the players return for pre-season training.

Barcelona reassure Roberto

As per SPORT, Sergi Roberto knows that he has the confidence of sporting director Deco and that new coach Hansi Flick would also be delighted to see him captain the team for a second season.

Therefore, the sporting conditions are in place for him to continue, there is no problem in the one-year contract between the club and the player, but Barcelona must solve their economic situation with La Liga.

Roberto has agreed to stay on for another year with one of the lowest salaries in the squad because of his love of Barcelona and his desire to win trophies as captain, as well as to inaugurate the new Spotify Camp Nou.

As such, from the club, they assure that Roberto can be registered when the ‘fair play’ is settled.

The 32-year-old, for his part, will wait and hopes not to find himself in the position of having to make a decision other than to continue at Barcelona.

What if continuity is not possible?

However, despite the club’s optimism, if Roberto is forced to accept a departure from Barcelona, he is unlikely to have any shortage of suitors.

Indeed, several clubs are already knocking on his door to sign him at zero cost, with the veteran already rejecting an offer from Sevilla.

If he has no choice but to leave, an option that is still far off, his priority is to continue in European football and he is particularly interested in the Premier League.
