From being a second-fiddle midfielder at Manchester United, Scott McTominay has firmly established himself as one of Serie A’s most impressive midfielders since joining Napoli in 2024.

His market value has gone up sharply, with the Englishman already racking up almost 50 competitive appearances for the Partenopei.

However, amid reports of McTominay struggling to cope with daily life in Naples, there has been increased speculation over his future, with Barcelona now emerging as a potential suitor.

Barcelona eye move for McTominay

As reported by ESPN, Barcelona have placed McTominay on a three-player shortlist as they plan their reinforcements for next summer.

McTominay has continued his bright form in Italy since leaving Manchester United last year, having directly contributed to three goals in eight games so far this season.

Barcelona’s interest in the 28-year-old former Manchester United star comes despite the recent renewal of Frenkie de Jong, as it appears the club are keen on unburdening the midfield, which is heavily reliant on the Dutchman and Pedri.

Barcelona, though, would have to wait until next summer before making a move for McTominay.

The report clarifies that a move in the January transfer window is categorically off the table. Napoli are in the midst of a Serie A title race and are unwilling to offload a key player mid-season.

This means Barcelona must wait until the summer, when the club will likely face stiff competition.

The report indicates that Premier League clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are also closely monitoring the midfielder’s situation.

This could make life even more difficult for the Blaugrana, knowing the club won’t be able to engage themselves in a bidding war.
