With the transfer window coming to an end this past Monday, FC Barcelona’s sporting department can breathe a sigh of relief.
However, the work does not stop for Deco and the rest of the sporting department, who now have the next major task on their agenda – the contract renewals of Frenkie de Jong and Eric Garcia.
Indeed, according to MARCA, Barcelona’s technical staff and executives have shifted their focus to closing the renewal agreements with both De Jong and Garcia at the earliest.
Barça had opened talks on extensions for both players many months ago, and negotiations are progressing very positively. All parties are optimistic about a swift resolution.
Both players want to stay, and the Catalans are determined to keep them. At 24 and 28 years old, respectively, Garcia and De Jong have both become regular starters under Hansi Flick, gaining importance in the team.
Securing their renewals is an urgent matter, as both players’ current deals expire in June 2026. Barça neither want to lose them nor risk seeing them depart on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Not very long ago, both De Jong and Garcia had doubts about remaining at Barcelona, but under Flick they have gained prominence both on the pitch and in the dressing room.
Garcia, for his part, has started all three La Liga matches so far in the new season: the first two at right-back and the most recent one at centre-back.
His versatility is one of the attributes most appreciated by Flick as the Spaniard can play at right-back, centre-back, or even defensive midfield.
De Jong, meanwhile, has started two league games, missing the match against Levante as he became a father that week.
Under Flick, the Dutchman has become a guaranteed starter in the team’s double pivot alongside Pedri and is also one of the team’s captains.
As such, the extensions for De Jong and Garcia are viewed as strategic moves as part of Barcelona’s long-term project, complementing recent renewals secured for other players such as Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Gavi, Raphinha and Jules Kounde.
