Barcelona have signed Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon in a rapid deal worth €70m plus €10m in add-ons, according to El Periódico de Catalunya. He is expected to sign his contract in the coming hours.
Gordon arrives to cover the exits of Robert Lewandowski and Marcus Rashford. Developed largely as a winger, he has increasingly operated as a centre forward. Barça first struck terms with the player, then reached agreement with Newcastle despite interest from Bayern and Liverpool.
Lewandowski has already left, and Rashford’s loan ends on 30 June. A permanent move would cost €30m to Manchester United, plus star-level wages. Rashford has revived his stock at Barça, returning to the national team, where he will find Gordon, who featured at Euro 2024.
Gordon played only one minute, coming on for Phil Foden against Slovenia. Deco had virtually sealed the deal on his last trip to London, easing pressure on Barça to recruit two forwards amid Lewandowski’s departure, uncertainty over Rashford and concerns over Raphinha’s fitness.
The fee was not the stumbling block after recent financial fair play constraints. Newcastle, owned by a Saudi fund, had no need to sell, and while Liverpool sought a forward after Mo Salah’s exit, the player’s wish to join Barça was decisive.
Gordon scored 10 goals and provided two assists in 12 Champions matches for Newcastle, including four against Qarabag in 45 minutes. He netted in the opening group game, a 1-2 defeat, playing as a centre forward. Newcastle were later eliminated by Barça after a 1-1 first leg and a 7-2 at Camp Nou.
