With the FIFA World Cup just around the corner, national teams are now looking for a stable squad they can focus on and build harmony into to prepare for the mega event.

The Spanish national team is no different, and Luis de la Fuente’s ideology of not disturbing what is working makes the squad almost finalised ahead of the competition.

Joan Garcia’s performances with Barcelona, however, complicate the manager’s situation and leave the coach with a serious dilemma, for the Catalan team’s goalkeeper is making a strong case to earn a call-up for the next international break and the World Cup.

A difficult objective

As relayed by SPORT in a recent report, the Spanish manager faces a difficult situation as Joan Garcia’s performances leave him with no reason not to call up the Barcelona star.

The new signing has been spectacular in all his games for his new side so far, but last night’s performance in the UEFA Champions League showed that he feels no pressure and that he is ready for the big stage.

Garcia, after all, was the sole reason Barcelona did not go 2-0 down in the first half, as he denied Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes with crucial saves and was also great with his distribution, and did not come under pressure from the high press.

Considering his top displays last season as well, a call-up to the Spain squad is long overdue for Garcia.

But De la Fuente’s idea of sticking with the working core may complicate matters and see him miss out. In any case, the manager now faces a crucial decision.

Currently, La Roja are served in goal by David Raya, Unai Simon, and Alex Remiro, and while the former has been in great touch, the latter duo have been far from impressive and could well be dropped if not for the manager’s preference for consistency.

In any case, the Barcelona goalkeeper can be proud of his steps forward and has indeed put pressure on the coach to consider his name.

Whether or not a call-up arrives in the upcoming break, it is only a matter of time before he possibly becomes the starting goalkeeper for Spain.
