A member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona played through the pain barrier to aid his country’s efforts at the World Cup this summer.
This comes amid the understanding that Frenkie de Jong’s tournament was plagued by a fitness complaint.
De Jong of course played a leading role for the Netherlands at the World Cup, featuring from the off in all four of the Oranje’s fixtures.
After an opening day meeting with Japan, however, the former Ajax man picked up a knee issue, which left him in consistent pain from then on.
As per a report from Diario Sport:
‘Against Morocco (in the Last-32), Frenkie de Jong played 110 minutes and did so with pain in his right knee. In fact, he had already played in pain in the last two group stage matches against Sweden and Tunisia.’
Despite this concerning news, De Jong is not expected to be forced to sit out any of Barcelona’s planned pre-season schedule.
