Although one of their most important defenders, Inigo Martinez, left for Saudi Arabia, FC Barcelona still retained most of the core of their team from the last season in the recently closed summer transfer window.
However, there are some players who do not have a lot of time left at the Catalan club, and this is particularly true for the Polish forward Robert Lewandowski, as he is already 37 years of age and in the last years of his contract.
This summer, Lewandowski was once again linked with a move away from the Catalan giants. In August, his agent Pini Zahavi revealed to Polish outlet Fakt that the striker had received a staggering offer worth more than €100 million per season from Saudi Arabia.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the two clubs behind the approach were Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr, who made the bid through an investment fund.
The Saudi sides were prepared to add incentives on top of the €100 million salary, but Lewandowski turned down the opportunity, determined to continue fighting for success with Barcelona in La Liga and the Champions League.
Still, Zahavi left the door slightly ajar for the future. He reportedly encouraged the Saudi clubs to try again, noting how quickly circumstances can change in football. With Lewandowski’s age and contract situation, much could depend on his performances this season.
For now, Lewandowski remains committed to Barcelona, where Zahavi says the striker feels “at home,” but the prospect of a future move to Saudi Arabia cannot be completely ruled out.
