It seems to happen every season, when club football takes a couple of weeks of break there is always a handful of stars who end up injured and returning home to sit on the sidelines.

Clubs often worry when their players jet off on international duty during the season, and on this occasion, Barcelona had a right to be worried, as one of their stars has had to come home.

The man in question is Fermín López, who according to Fabrizio Romano has had to leave international duty with Spain’s U21s prematurely due to a muscle injury.

Fermín will now return to Barcelona to undergo tests, where the extent of his injuries will be revealed and he will begin the recovery process.

The 21-year-old played just 29 minutes of Barcelona’s clinic against Real Valladolid over the weekend, coming on in the 61st minute to replace Pedri.

The midfielder also played in Spain’s Olympic gold medal-winning campaign, and this injury could be a sign that the minutes are now catching up to him.

Hansi Flick will now be hoping that this is a unique case, and that none of his other players face the same fate whilst away representing their countries.

With the great start that Barcelona have had to the season, they need to maintain fitness in their squad if they want to see their form continue.
