La Liga giants Barcelona will be forced to make do without the services of a big-name player for their upcoming meeting with Atlético Madrid.
The Blaugrana star in question? Robert Lewandowski.
Frontman Lewandowski was for his part back in action on Saturday, as Barcelona played host to Villarreal in a La Liga clash.
After Ferran Torres was handed the role of starting centre-forward at the Camp Nou, the 37-year-old was introduced off the bench during the 2nd-half.
And en route to an eventual 4-1 Blaugrana triumph, Lewandowski rounded out the scoring courtesy of his 11th goal of the Spanish top-flight campaign.
Such exploits were expected to place the former Bayern Munich man in contention for a starting berth against Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey this week.
As alluded to above, however, this will not prove to be the case.
As per a statement across Barca’s social media platforms:
‘First team player Robert Lewandowski picked up an injury in the recent game against Villarreal. Tests have diagnosed a fracture of the left eye socket. He will miss the game against Atlético Madrid.’
