A member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona has early this week been dealt nothing short of a hammer blow on the fitness front.

This comes amid the widespread understanding that Fermín López is set miss this summer’s World Cup through injury.

Midfielder Fermín for his part featured from the off on Sunday evening, as Barcelona locked horns with Real Betis in a La Liga clash.

En route to a 3-1 Blaugrana triumph, however, the 23-year-old was hooked from proceedings at the interval, replaced by Alejandro Balde.

And as alluded to above, 24 hours on, an explanation for precisely why has been forthcoming online…

As per a statement across Barcelona’s website and social media platforms, Fermín has picked up a fractured bone in his right foot.

Already pencilled in for surgery, the all-action midfielder’s World Cup hopes therefore appear dead in the water:

‘The first-team player Fermín López suffered a fracture to the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot in the game against Betis. The player will undergo surgery.’
