Following a breakthrough in talks, the Catalan giants have already reached a total agreement on personal terms with the 25-year-old England international, who is eager to seal a marquee move to the Nou Camp from St James’ Park.
The increased pursuit of Gordon could trigger a massive domino effect that directly threatens Marcus Rashford’s future.
Rashford, who spent a highly productive campaign on loan at Barca from Manchester United—tallying 14 goals and 11 assists—was widely expected to trigger a permanent €30 million buy option after even agreeing to a significant salary reduction.
However, Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco increasingly view Gordon as a younger, more dynamic long-term profile for the left flank.
Deco’s urgency to wrap up the Gordon deal is fueled by intense elite competition. With Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Liverpool all hovering around the former Evertonian, Barcelona want to strike first and leave no room for a Premier League hijack.
Despite Eddie Howe’s desire to keep his core squad intact, a disappointing 12th-place finish in the Premier League has left Newcastle without Champions League revenue, all but forcing a major sale for the Magpies to remain compliant with Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Gordon’s relationship at St James’ Park has also grown complex; he was left on the bench for Newcastle’s final four matches of the campaign, and Howe admitted following a final-day defeat to Fulham that the winger’s future was up in the air.
