Barcelona are edging closer to signing Rodri, although they are yet to reach a club-to-club agreement with Manchester City. Personal terms are already in place after the Spanish midfielder opted to reject Real Madrid in favour of a move to Catalonia, but there is still work to be done before he ends up at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Real Madrid had been considered overwhelming favourites for weeks to sign Rodri, having agreed personal terms themselves. However, their inability to strike a deal with Man City was their undoing, and ultimately, it allowed Barcelona to swoop in successfully.

Now, it is Barcelona’s turn to try and agree a deal with Man City. They are confident of getting it done soon, although The Athletic have reported that their opening offer has been knocked back by the Premier League giants.

Man City asking for €80m to sell Rodri

Barcelona had proposed a bid of €45m to Man City, but it was rejected relatively quickly. The Catalans are aware that the current asking price is €80m, and while they are not prepared to come close to reaching that amount, the likelihood is that a deal could end up being done for a fee in the region of €60m.

Rodri would be a seismic signing for Barcelona. They had not planned to address their midfield options this summer despite being prepared to sell Marc Casado, but with Frenkie de Jong’s injury situation, they were forced to enter the market, and they could now be about to walk away with one of the world’s best players.

There should be sufficient movement over the coming days, with Barcelona keen to strike a deal as soon as possible. They will hope that Rodri is in the building by the start of the new season, although he’s unlikely to play an immediate part after undergoing minor surgery in the aftermath of the 2026 World Cup.
