Barcelona target ready to accept backup role to secure summer move

Joan Garcia is Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper by some distance, and Wojciech Szczesny serves as his backup for the ongoing season.

While the number 1 spot will continue to be undisputed next season, the Barcelona management sees a need to recruit a new backup goalkeeper to fill in for Szczesny, who has not shown much zeal to play in recent months.

Given the Polish goalkeeper’s age and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s likely departure, it only makes sense that the club look for new signings, and Spanish international Alex Remiro has caught the administration’s eye.

Open to join

Recently, Barcelona, led by Deco, met with Remiro’s agents to discuss a possible move to Catalonia for the Real Sociedad star.

Now, as reported by Mundo Deportivo, Remiro is open to making the move to Barcelona, even to just be the backup goalkeeper.

He understands the vacancy and is willing to come in and fight with Joan Garcia above him on the pecking order.

His transfer fee, if he were to join in the summer, will stand at €15 million, and it remains to be seen what the Blaugrana make of that figure.

After all, they are pressed for funds and have positions that are in more urgent need of signings.

Remiro’s current contract runs out in 2027 and Deco and Co. are maintaining a close eye on his situation. With his release clause having dropped from €50 million to €15 million in a year, he is an ideal target if the finances support the move.

So far this season, Remiro has made 29 league starts for La Real and averages 1.6 goals conceded per game. He has overseen just two clean sheets but makes 2.6 saves per game on average.
