FC Barcelona lost one of their most important defenders from the last season, Inigo Martinez, during the last summer transfer window, and ever since then, they have been linked with other notable names from the market to bolster their backline.

One of the names that has emerged on their radar is Bayern Munich’s French centre-back Dayot Upamecano. With his contract set to expire next summer, the defender’s situation has drawn attention from several major European clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, and top Premier League sides.

According to reports from Fichajes, Upamecano is demanding a salary of around €16 million per season before committing to a new contract. This figure has already created hesitation among potential suitors, including Real Madrid, who admire the player but are unwilling to engage in a financial bidding war.

At Bayern Munich, there is growing concern over the defender’s future. The German club is aware that its negotiating position is weakening as the contract nears its end, and there has been little indication from the player’s camp of an imminent renewal. Bayern would prefer to keep him, yet they consider his salary demands to be beyond their current wage structure.

Barcelona’s situation is even more complicated. The sporting department, led by Deco, has shown interest in the Frenchman, but the club’s ongoing financial restrictions make a deal of this magnitude extremely difficult.

Unless the salary figure is significantly reduced or offset by other conditions, it would be nearly impossible for the Catalan side to proceed.

Upamecano, who is 26 years old, is at a decisive point in his career. Over recent seasons, he has established himself as one of Europe’s most complete defenders, combining physical strength, pace, and tactical awareness.

He is also a regular for the French national team and believes his next contract should reflect his importance at both club and international level.

If the player decides against renewing with Bayern, he will be free to negotiate with other clubs starting in January. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona remain attentive to developments, while Premier League sides such as Chelsea and Liverpool are also expected to explore the opportunity.

For Bayern, retaining Upamecano would guarantee stability in defence, but losing him without compensation would represent both a sporting and institutional setback.

The coming months will determine whether the German champions can meet the player’s expectations or whether one of Europe’s giants will manage to secure his signature.
