FC Barcelona were dealt a major scare last night during their 0-2 loss to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Key midfielder Pedri had to be taken off at the end of the first half due to discomfort in his hamstring, causing concerns ahead of the business end of the season.

Since then, it has emerged that there is no injury for the 23-year-old midfielder, with him not even requiring any medical tests, which will come as a major relief.

No risks with Pedri

And, according to SPORT, Barcelona intend to act with maximum caution regarding Pedri following the fitness scare on Wednesday night.

Hansi Flick is firm in his approach of not risking the health of his players at the slightest sign of discomfort. This was the case with Pedri.

The Spanish midfielder was slightly fatigued, and the coach preferred to substitute him at half-time for Gavi, even though the issue was minor.

Pedri wanted to remain on the pitch, as he showed with his effort in the first half, and he likely could have continued after the break.

However, Flick decided that now is the time to take no risks with a key player in midfield.

So, even though he is expected to be available to face Espanyol on Saturday, it remains to be seen whether he will start or be rested with an eye on the upcoming clash on Tuesday against Atletico Madrid.

The ideal scenario would be for Pedri to rest, although this appears difficult as Frenkie de Jong has only resumed group training, and Marc Bernal is also not ready due to an ankle sprain.

What is beyond doubt is that Pedri wants to be with his teammates at this delicate moment following the setback against Atletico. He is a leader on the pitch and in the dressing room, and will push with all his strength to achieve the team’s objectives.
