FC Barcelona made a significant move on Wednesday in their pursuit of Julian Alvarez, as sporting director Deco held a direct meeting with his agent, Fernando Hidalgo.
Now, the La Liga champions have accelerated their pursuit of the 26-year-old striker, with the club already preparing their first offer for the Atletico Madrid ace.
According to SPORT, Barcelona’s opening proposal for Alvarez is expected to be worth around €90 million plus bonuses.
It falls in line with previous reports that suggested that the Catalans had set a strict spending limit of €100 million for the striker.

As per the report, this will neither be a quick nor straightforward negotiation, and certainly not comparable to the recent Anthony Gordon operation.
After all, Atletico Madrid are reportedly demanding an extremely high fee for the Argentina international. In addition, PSG are said to be strongly determined to pursue the player, while Arsenal also continue to monitor the situation closely.
Despite the complexity of the operation, Barcelona believe that meaningful progress has been achieved in recent weeks, something that was discussed during Wednesday’s meeting.
During conversations between the club and the player’s representatives, Barcelona conveyed the need for Alvarez to make some form of gesture demonstrating his preferred destination.
The objective was for Atletico to clearly understand that the striker’s desire is to play for Barça despite interest and pressure from other major European clubs. Within the club, there is now a belief that this has already happened.

Moreover, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has spoken with the Argentine forward on several occasions, while Deco has maintained constant contact with his representatives since before the beginning of 2026.
This demonstrates that Barcelona do not view Alvarez as a simple market opportunity, but rather as a signing that has been carefully worked on for a long time and considered a major priority within the club’s sporting planning.
Even so, nobody inside the club is attempting to project excessive optimism. The financial aspect remains the biggest obstacle, as Atletico will not facilitate an easy departure. Nevertheless, Barcelona intend to pursue the deal until the very end.
