Barcelona ‘to weigh’ sale of Spain international Ferran Torres this summer

Barcelona have made a number nine their main summer priority, prompting internal debates over who might make way in the squad.

Sport reports that Ferran Torres is being considered for a sale. Many had presumed Robert Lewandowski would depart when his deal ends this season, though there have also been suggestions he could return in a rotational role rather than compete for starts.

Torres is Barcelona’s top scorer this season and has usually started ahead of Lewandowski, even if the Polish forward has begun several of the biggest matches. He has 16 goals and one assist in 31 games, and is under contract until 2027. A renewal had been discussed, but there has been no movement since October, and the 25-year-old Spain international wants to stay.

If Torres does leave, it seems likely Lewandowski would remain as back-up. If Lewandowski were to go, Barcelona would save around €30m in gross wages next season. Any fresh agreement would likely involve a significant pay cut, although only a €3m reduction would count towards the salary limit even if his actual wage fell further.

Barcelona must decide whether to cash in on Torres with one year left on his deal this summer, mindful that keeping him would probably require a long-term contract on higher wages. He has been a consistent performer under Hansi Flick, yet has not been an undisputed starter.
