Barcelona Halt Summer Spending as Focus Shifts to Squad Registrations

Big Signings Completed but La Liga Registration Looms

Barcelona’s summer transfer activity appears to have concluded, and attention now turns to the less glamorous but vital process of registering players. After a successful pre-season tour in Asia, capped off by a 5-0 win over Daegu FC, the club’s focus is no longer on recruitment, but rather on compliance with La Liga’s strict financial regulations.

According to The Athletic, “Barcelona are done with signings in this transfer window. After the arrivals of Garcia, Szczesny, Rashford and Bardghji, Laporta and Deco do not expect any other major arrivals this summer, and they are now focused on registrations.”

The club’s ability to field its new additions in La Liga hinges on how successfully it navigates these regulations. With goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen sidelined following back surgery, there is a possibility that his injury could help ease the registration process if deemed long-term. “Barcelona would be in a position to use 80 per cent of Ter Stegen’s salary to register a new player,” The Athletic reports.

Joan Garcia Top Priority in Registration Queue

Of all the summer arrivals, Joan Garcia’s situation appears to be the most urgent. The 23-year-old keeper is expected to feature regularly in Ter Stegen’s absence. “Joan Garcia’s registration does not depend on Ter Stegen,” Joan Laporta stated. “But his absence, given it is an important injury, could provide a more straightforward way to register him.”

Alongside Garcia, big-name arrivals Marcus Rashford and Wojciech Szczesny are also awaiting registration. While there is optimism within the club that both will be included without the need for a major outgoing transfer, it is the administrative process rather than the sporting challenge currently causing concern.

As Laporta noted on the tour, “All the registrations are progressing adequately. It is better to work in silence and not speak too much about it in public.”

Roony Bardghji, meanwhile, may find a route through the club’s B team if no first-team space becomes available. His development will be closely monitored regardless of registration status.

Squad Depth Brings Selection Challenges for Flick

Barcelona’s recruitment success brings with it a different kind of challenge. Hansi Flick will be managing one of the deepest squads in Spain, particularly with players like Fermin Lopez and Marc Casado showing no intention of leaving, despite limited first-team opportunities.

Hector Fort appears the most likely departure. “The 19-year-old right-back has lost his place in Flick’s priority list… which pushed Barca and Flick to tell the player it would be best for him to find a new club.”

The club hope to secure a sale with a buy-back clause included, preserving future options. Elsewhere, there is no major sale planned, a rarity in recent Barcelona windows. That reflects both financial caution and confidence in the current squad’s depth.

Barca Enter Season with Optimism and Clarity

There is a rare sense of clarity at Camp Nou. Flick has a full squad to work with, including some major summer additions, and Laporta and Deco appear aligned in strategy.

The real test will be how swiftly the registration issues are resolved and whether Rashford, Szczesny, Garcia and Bardghji are ready for La Liga action from the outset. But the groundwork is done. Now it’s about execution.
