According to a recent revelation from MARCA, Barcelona’s pursuit of Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia is entering a critical financial phase, with the club currently exploring options to collect the €25 million necessary to activate his release clause.

Although the agreement between the player and Barça has been fully finalised, the move cannot be made official until the amount is paid in full.

The Catalan giants have their eyes set on making Garcia their first signing ahead of the 2025/26 season. However, the process is being held up due to the club’s ongoing efforts to raise the required funds.

At this point, sources close to the matter do not rule out the possibility of resorting to a bank loan to complete the operation.

The Barcelona board is actively working on various financial avenues to wrap up the transfer.

No sense of panic in Barcelona

Despite the delay, there is no sense of panic within the Barcelona camp. The summer transfer window does not officially open until July 1, and the players are not scheduled to return for pre-season training until mid-July.

As such, time is not working against the club, and the directors are proceeding methodically to avoid any financial missteps.

For now, the focus remains firmly on collecting the €25 million that will free Garcia from his contract with Espanyol.

Once that hurdle is cleared, the deal is expected to be completed swiftly. The player has already given his full agreement to join Barça, and the remaining formalities are purely administrative.

Espanyol keeping an eye

Meanwhile, Espanyol are observing developments from a distance. They consider Garcia’s departure a personal decision and have opted not to interfere in the process.

It is expected that the goalkeeper will soon bid farewell to the fans, most likely through a message on social media.

Barcelona’s interest in Garcia underlines their commitment to reshaping the squad under new leadership, and while this transfer has proven slightly more complicated financially, there is little doubt at this stage that it will ultimately be completed.
