Barcelona have asked Spain’s football authorities to take coordinated legal action against Florentino Pérez, the Real Madrid president, in the latest escalation of the Negreira row. The move followed Madrid’s call on Wednesday for UEFA to reopen its disciplinary case against Barcelona.
The club said in a statement that interim president Rafael Yuste had written to the heads of LaLiga, the Spanish football federation and the Technical Referees Committee.
Barcelona argued the comments attributed to Pérez were inaccurate and a serious attack on the honour and image of the domestic competition and the refereeing community. The club believes his remarks harm the reputation and credibility of professional football in Spain, and asked the bodies to adopt urgent, coordinated legal measures against him.
The letter referred to Pérez’s public interventions on 12 and 13 May, soon after his re-election, when he claimed several Madrid titles had been stolen, alleged systemic corruption and described the Negreira case as the worst scandal in football.
After those comments, Barcelona threatened Pérez with criminal proceedings, but have not proceeded to date.
