After deciding to make the Spaniard Joan Garcia their next long-term goalkeeper, and thus undergoing a generational change in this position, last year, FC Barcelona had to address the goalkeeping position once again this summer.
This was particularly the case as two of their goalies returned to the team having completed their loan stints, i.e., Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Inaki Pena, while the future of the youngster Diego Kochen had also to be addressed.
Fortunately, the Catalans have already addressed most of these issues. Inaki Pena has already left the Blaugrana club to join the Greek side Panathinaikos for €3 million, while Kochen has also joined the newly promoted Danish side Lyngby Boldklub on a season long loan.
Meanwhile, Barcelona also seem close to addressing the remaining third issue on this position, i.e., that of ter Stegen. According to a report from Diario AS, the German goalie is also close to finalizing his move to the Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam, which he will join on a season-long loan.
Thus, he would get to play once again under the coach with whom he played for a few weeks with Girona, before getting injured, i.e., Michel. It needs to be noted here that he would be joining the Eredivisie side only for one season, and with his contract running till 2028, he would return to Barcelona next year, and the Catalans would once again have to sort out his future at that time.
Meanwhile, the goalkeeping position at the Blaugrana club has significantly cleared up with this episode. Joan Garcia is set to remain the starter for Hansi Flick once again this season, while the Polish veteran Wojciech Szczesny would be his backup. Hopefully, ter Stegen would be able to finalize this move soon, and get to play a prominent part in his new club next season.
