Signed out of the blue almost a year ago, Wojciech Szczesny became a bit of a cult hero at Barcelona last season, playing an important role in their domestic treble success.

Given his experience, the value he brought to the team, and his contributions, Barcelona decided to extend his contract in the summer, keeping him at the club for at least one more season.

This time, however, Szczesny has had to take a backseat as new signing Joan Garcia is the undisputed starter in goal and has done exceedingly well in the opening weeks.

Szczesny happy with being a substitute

Speaking to Canal+ (h/t SPORT) after the Newcastle clash, Szczesny admitted that he is embracing his role as deputy to Garcia with remarkable openness.

“I’m a backup and, barring any surprises, I’ll continue to be one. My role this season is to prepare Joan Garcia as best I can for matches,” the veteran Pole said.

The 35-year-old also had words of praise for Garcia, calling him one of the best in Europe, as he said:

“I think he’s a goalkeeper with incredible potential, who is already among the best in Europe physically. I’m very proud to play this role; I prepared for it when I signed my new contract, and I’m not disappointed.”

Szczesny has long admired Garcia, even back when the 24-year-old was at Espanyol, and is now focused on helping him handle high-pressure occasions such as his Champions League debut at St. James’ Park, where the Barça new signing once again impressed.

“Joan lacks experience at the highest level, and that’s something he needs to work on. I’ll try to help him maintain a consistent level throughout the season,” Szczesny said.

“It’s not easy to play every three days under so much pressure. It’s something he needs to learn. I hope I can contribute to his success.”

It is this kind of attitude and the care that Szczesny has shown during his time at Barcelona that has made him a popular and beloved figure inside the dressing room.

So far, Szczesny has not featured in even a single game this season, and it is likely that his minutes will come in the Copa del Rey.
