One of the major decisions FC Barcelona have to make in the coming months concerns the future of veteran striker Robert Lewandowski.

The Poland captain, 37, has only a few months left on his current contract and has, so far, not made a definitive decision over his next move.

There is significant interest coming in from Juventus as well as clubs in Turkey and the MLS. Meanwhile, re-elected Barça president Joan Laporta has made it clear that he intends to offer the striker a new short-term contract.

Lewandowski continuity unlikely

However, according to Luis F Rojo of MARCA, while keeping Lewandowski is not completely out of the question, as things stand, the chances of that happening are very slim.

The two factors working against the former Bayern Munich superstar are his age – he will be turning 38 years old in a few months – and his high salary.

Even though the possibility of the striker accepting a reduced wage has been floated, the report claims that Lewandowski’s continuity, at the moment, remains highly unlikely.

A final definitive decision has not yet been made and will be taken only at the end of the season.

Having arrived from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022, at a time when the club was going through a difficult time, Lewandowski has excelled in his four years at Barcelona.

So far, the 37-year-old has netted 117 goals in 184 matches for the Catalans, of which 16 have come in the ongoing season.

This season, Lewandowski has taken a bit of a backseat in terms of his role in Hansi Flick’s team. Ferran Torres has been preferred as a regular starter in the No. 9 position, although that changed in recent weeks with the Spaniard going through a lean patch.

It remains to be seen whether Lewandowski decides to sign a new contract or leave in the summer, which could impact Barcelona’s transfer plans.
