The recent showing that FC Barcelona put up against Atletico Madrid is inexcusable. Lacklustre and completely out of their depth, Hansi Flick’s side failed to put up a display that could have earned them a positive result in that game.
However, while the performance itself was hardly anything to remember, there is some controversy involved with how the game was officiated. Specifically according to a new report, Pau Cubarsi’s goal that was disallowed in the second half is a rather peculiar incident that has a bizarre aftermath worth noting.
As highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, there was no clarifying audio from the VAR team the following day after the match itself. This raises suspicions over the validity of the call itself, considering how it is common for said audio to be released after games.

Moreover, the fact that it took close to seven minutes to make this call in order to rule out Cubarsi’s goal was a bizarre occurrence. While it possibly would not have made a huge difference towards the result, football is known for it’s unpredictability and a different kind of call might have propelled Barça forward with more motivation and a better chance to score even more goals.
Unfortunately, occurrences like this where the VAR technology should be used more transparently are becoming problematic. Barcelona suffered because of that this time around, and in a tie where each and every goal matters, that was a very tight call made with seemingly very little care or justification.
