Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain meet in a huge Champions League showdown this evening.
Two of the tournament favourites clash in a league phase contest, in what could be an early statement result. It’s the champions of Spain vs the reigning French and European champions, in a clash no fan will want to miss.
Both sides head into the new season with new goalkeepers, with Joan Garcia claiming the number one role at Barcelona and Lucas Chevalier replacing Gianluigi Donnarumma for PSG. Garcia edges out this individual battle, following an outstanding matchday one performance at Newcastle. The Spaniard’s shot-stopping ensured Barcelona left St James’ Park with an important three points.
The best right-back in the world. Hakimi is so effective on the front foot, excellent defensively, and delivers in big moments. The complete package.
Paris Saint-Germain’s long-time leader finally got his hands on the big prize last season, captaining the Parisians to a maiden Champions League success. The Brazilian is the glue that holds together Luis Enrique’s side.
Another gem from the La Masia talent factory. Cubarsi is perhaps the perfect centre-back for Barcelona. The 18-year-old barely misplaces a pass and defends with the maturity of a player a decade his senior. A third-place finish in The Kopa Trophy was well deserved.
The other half of PSG’s potent full-back pairing. There’s a strong argument that the holders have the best full-backs in world football. Mendes is a menace to opposition teams with his surging runs forward and wicked deliveries.
Vitinha’s importance to the PSG side was recognised with a third-place finish in the Ballon d’Or vote. A metronome at the base of the club’s midfield, Vitinha was the press-proof dictator in Europe’s best club side last season.
Vitinha’s partner in crime, Joao Neves, has a combination of tenacity and technique that has taken the Portuguese starlet to the very top.
A recent hat-trick against Toulouse, including two overhead kicks and a long-range strike, was utterly absurd. There’s even more to come from Neves.
Arguably, the best midfielder in the game. The Ballon d’Or politics might not have said so, but the eye test certainly does.
Pedri is incredible to watch, with an unteachable ability to weave out of trouble and evade pressure. The heartbeat of the Barcelona team.
Lamine Yamal might just have missed out on the Ballon d’Or in 2025, but it would be a brave person to bet against the 18-year-old claiming the award in the near future.
Already, there’s an argument that Yamal is the most influential talent in the game, with a level of wing wizardry rarely, if ever, seen from a player so young.
Last season’s La Liga Player of the Season, Raphinha’s redemption arc is a wonderful story. At risk of being ousted at Barcelona just over a year ago, he’s now irreplaceable to the Catalans.
He scored 34 goals and created 25 more last season in a campaign that took the Brazilian to world-class status.
Ousmane Dembele will miss out on the reunion with his former team through injury, but it’s impossible to leave out the Ballon d’Or winner.
Dembele was recognised as football’s finest this week by a considerable margin, having been the driving force in PSG’s all-conquering side. A mammoth 35 goals and countless moments of individual brilliance propelled PSG to their historic season.
