Barcelona retain trophy with historic victory over arch-rivals at Camp Nou
Barcelona have been crowned as LaLiga champions for the second season in a row and 29th time overall. Hansi Flick’s side achieved the feat with three games still to play this term after dispatching of arch-rivals Real Madrid 2-0 in Sunday’s final El Clasico showdown of the campaign in Catalonia. Barca went into the day just needing to avoid defeat to become the first side to clinch the title in arguably the biggest game in club football since 1932, but did more than enough thanks to Marcus Rashford’s brilliant early free-kick and a fine goal from Ferran Torres that owed much to a sumptuous Dani Olmo flick.
Confident Barcelona had several more chances to make their margin of victory more emphatic, but found returning Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in impressive form. They will need to win all of their remaining matches to equal the LaLiga record of 100 points, while a win over Real Betis next weekend would see them go through a whole league season with a 100 per cent winning home record at the Camp Nou. It was a bittersweet moment for head coach Flick, who was in the dugout following the death of his father, which was announced just hours ahead of kick-off.
For Real Madrid, who had a goal disallowed through Jude Bellingham, it wasn’t the worst display but a nightmare week dominated by the training ground bust-ups between Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni, plus the absence of Kylian Mbappe, nevertheless ended in dreadful fashion as a second straight season without a major trophy was officially confirmed amid rumours of a sensational return for Jose Mourinho this summer.
