Hansi Flick continues to strengthen his authority at Barcelona, and now the club is preparing their next big move, one that shows both trust and caution.

According to recent developments from Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are ready to extend Flick’s stay beyond his current 2027 deal, with plans already in motion to push it to 2028.

Understandably, it comes as no surprise, given the German’s remarkable impact.

After guiding the team to a domestic treble and putting them on track for consecutive La Liga titles, Flick has restored belief and structure at the club.

However, this renewal is not as straightforward as it may seem.

This is because while both parties are aligned in their desire to continue together, there is a clear understanding that timing matters just as much as the agreement itself.

What’s the story?

Barcelona’s leadership have already established a strong relationship with Flick and his agent Pini Zahavi.

That trust has led to a verbal agreement to extend his contract by one additional year, taking it to 2028.

Yet, despite this understanding, Flick has deliberately chosen not to formalise the deal at this stage of the season.

The reasoning is that he does not want his position in the title race to influence negotiations or give the impression that he is capitalising on success.

Furthermore, Barcelona are already thinking one step further, as the club have informed Flick that they would like to include an additional optional year in his renewal package.

This clause would effectively secure his long-term future if certain performance-based targets are met, taking his deal to 2029.

Flick wants patience

If Flick continues delivering silverware, such as winning the UEFA Champions League, Barcelona would have the option to extend his stay even further.

However, Flick has made it clear that discussions about contract extensions, including the optional year, should wait until the season concludes.

This is because the manager wants a fair and objective evaluation of the campaign before any commitments are finalised.
