In a strategic move that signals their intent to secure football's next generation of stars, FC Barcelona appears to have won the race for one of Europe's most coveted young talents. According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan giants have reached a verbal agreement to sign 17-year-old Portuguese winger Cardoso Varela from Dinamo Zagreb.

The deal, a testament to Varela's immense potential, is understood to be structured around an initial fixed fee of €5 million, a figure that could more than quadruple with various add-ons, potentially reaching a total value of €25 million. This significant investment is aimed at a player who, despite his youth, has already begun to turn heads far beyond Croatia.

The rising star, who has been dazzling for Dinamo Zagreb's youth squads and has already dipped his toes into senior football, is considered a jewel for the future. However, Barcelona's pursuit requires a patient hand. With Varela's contract binding him to the Croatian club until 2028, his transition to the Camp Nou is not imminent, framing this as a long-term acquisition for the Blaugrana.

This patient approach has been orchestrated from the top. The club's sporting director, Deco, has taken a personal interest in the teenager's development, ensuring that Barcelona's line of communication has remained consistently open. Through regular contact with the player's representative, Andy Bara, Deco and his team have meticulously monitored Varela's progress, laying the groundwork for a deal they believe will pay dividends for years to come.
