Barcelona Femení‘s hope of securing another domestic treble have been dashed after being suspended from the Copa de la Reina.
The club’s fate was first in doubt after their 9-0 win over Osasuna in the tournament earlier this month.
Osasuna lodged a complaint with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) after Barcelona fielded an ineligible player.
Geyse Ferreira, who signed for the Catalonians last summer from Madrid CFF, was brought on as a substitute and scored Barca’s seventh in the nine-goal demolition.
However, Osasuna claimed they felt Geyse should have been suspended for the clash, following a red card she picked up last season while she was still with Madrid CFF.
The Brazilian was sent off after two yellow cards during a clash against Sporting de Huelva.
Now, a decision has been made.
Sevilla are also in a similar situation and have been removed from the competition after fielding an ineligible player in Nagore Calderón.
Both clubs now have the opportunity to appeal the decisions.
Barcelona also made headlines this week after their triumph in the Spanish Super Cup.
They stormed to a 3-0 victory over Real Sociedad but their trophy ceremony was soured when they had to hand out their own winners’ medals.
Usually, the Spanish President awards the champions their silverware, but the odd scenes showed the Barca stars picking up their own gongs.
This is reportedly because both Barcelona and Real Sociedad stars are currently locked in a dispute with the RFEF over the treatment of the country’s national team players.
Complaints have been lodged against women’s head coach Jorge Vilda and high profile players have criticised a toxic dressing room atmosphere.
However, the RFEF has stated the players must apologise to Vilda if they want to play for Spain again in the future.
According to Marca, RFEF representatives did not want to take photos with ‘Las 15’ after the Spanish Super Cup — the Barcelona players who are taking a stand against Vilda.
