Barcelona have been busy in recent weeks, as they prepare themselves for the opening of the summer transfer window. They have already signed Anthony Gordon, while a deal is also being worked on for Real Racing Club de Santander defender Jorge Salinas – but it will be a contract renewal that is the next order of business at Can Barca.
Earlier this month, it was reported that Barcelona had activated plans to tie down Andreas Christensen to a new contract. The Danish centre-back has had a wretched last two seasons because of injury, but he is also seen as a valuable member of Hansi Flick’s squad, which is why a surprise renewal has been sought by sporting director Deco.
Last week, an agreement on a two-year contract was reached, and MD have now reported that Barcelona will announce in the next 48 hours that Christensen will be staying. The club’s intention is to reveal the renewal before the 30-year-old’s current deal expires on Tuesday, with the plan being that it will officially be signed alongside president Joan Laporta the following day.
Christensen’s new contract will run until the summer of 2028, although there is a chance that he leaves Barcelona as a free agent at the end of next season. The agreement between player and club includes a unilateral break clause that either party can activate prior to the start of the 2027-28 campaign, should it be deemed necessary.
Both Barcelona and Christensen will hope that this won’t be necessary, as the hope is that he will be able to stay injury-free and make a telling contribution on the pitch. Flick was one of the people pushing to renew the Denmark international, and he will also hope that his decision does not prove to be the wrong one.
