Barcelona continue to regard Julian Alvarez as their priority signing of the summer transfer window.

However, according to MARCA’s Luis F Rojo, the Catalan club have decided to delay their decisive approach until after the World Cup.

Negotiations remain complicated, with Atletico Madrid maintaining their refusal to sell the Argentine striker to a direct La Liga rival despite Alvarez’s recent public comments suggesting that a transfer would be the best outcome for everyone involved.

No moves during the World Cup knockout stage

Barcelona are sticking to their strategy in the hope that Atletico will eventually agree to negotiate.

The Catalan giants have deliberately chosen not to intervene while the World Cup has entered its knockout rounds.

Although Alvarez spoke publicly about his future during the tournament, those comments came while the group stage was still being played.

Barcelona believe now is not the right moment to intensify negotiations, with Argentina fully focused on the competition.

As a result, the club will wait until the World Cup concludes, or at least until Argentina’s participation comes to an end, before making what is expected to be their final attempt to sign the striker.

Decision needed before pre-season

Once the tournament is over, Barcelona intend to seek a definitive answer from Atletico Madrid regarding the player’s future.

Time is becoming increasingly important, with the first members of Hansi Flick’s squad due back for preseason on 13 July.

The Blaugrana want greater clarity over the composition of the squad before preparations for the new campaign begin.

Before any transfer discussions can progress, Alvarez is expected to meet with Atletico Madrid to establish whether the club are prepared to honour what he reportedly believes was a promise to facilitate his departure.

Los Rojiblancos are willing to consider selling the forward, but not to Barcelona, against whom they have now filed a complaint with FIFA and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

For now, the Blaugrana’s attention remains fixed on Alvarez, but the decisive phase of the pursuit is expected to begin only after the World Cup reaches its conclusion.
