Barcelona have not held back in turning towards the academy this season, especially in the midfield and forward departments, in recent years.
From Lamine Yamal to Fermin Lopez and Gavi, the Catalan first team is filled with names of stars who graduated through the youth ranks.
One player who has not got his chances with the senior team but is seen to have great potential is Unai Hernandez, who is currently leading the charge for Barça Atletic.
Hernandez has been on fire for the subsidiary team this season and has been one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise deplorable campaign.
The midfielder, who also plays as a left-winger, has racked up eight goals and three assists and has thus contributed to a staggering 32% of the team’s goals.
As relayed by SPORT, however, his contract with Barcelona runs out in June 2025 and a renewal has still not been finalized.

Come January, the player will be free to negotiate with external clubs over an agreement to sign on a free transfer.
While that option indeed exists, the Spanish outlet claims that both Barcelona and Hernandez intend to continue together.
The two parties met in a meeting a couple of months ago and discussed the mutual will to renew his contract. It will be a priority for Barcelona to close the operation in the opening months of January.
A major factor that will play a part in the young gem’s renewal, needless to say, will be the prospect of playing under Hansi Flick.
The competition for a place in midfield is ruthless and there appears to be no room to accommodate Unai. However, there is a vacancy on the left flank if he can carve out a niche for himself in the department.
