Barcelona are discovering just how valuable Fermin Lopez is this season.

With Dani Olmo and Raphinha sidelined through injury, the La Masia graduate has become a crucial figure for Hansi Flick.

Just months ago, there were doubts about his future at the club, but now he is proving indispensable.

In yesterday’s match against Girona, Fermin returned from a muscle injury and immediately made his presence felt.

Substituted on at half-time for Toni Fernandez, he displayed the aggression and creativity that define his game.

He came close to scoring multiple times, showing Barcelona fans why he could have been a key player all along.

Olmo’s absence has created a clear pathway for Fermin to stake his claim, and while both are strong contenders for the attacking midfield role, Fermin currently seems to be the first choice this season.

A key week ahead for Barcelona

Fermin’s value goes beyond his offensive contributions. He is one of the few players capable of addressing Barcelona’s pressing issues and lifting the team’s overall intensity.

Flick is counting on him to lead that effort, especially when Raphinha returns. This season, Fermin has already scored twice, and last season, he contributed 18 goals in total, combining goals and assists.

Managing his minutes will be critical in the coming week, with crucial fixtures against Olympiakos in the Champions League and Real Madrid in La Liga.

Against Girona, he played only the second half, but his performance suggests he is becoming a regular starter.

A midfield trio of De Jong, Pedri, and Fermin could offer the stability and dynamism Barcelona need during a challenging period.

Just a few months ago, his place, as well as his future, at the club was uncertain, but today, Barcelona rely on Fermin more than ever.
