Even though an official announcement has not been made yet, Jijantes FC has brought forward an update on who will be the team captains at FC Barcelona in the new season.

With Sergi Roberto departing this summer, there was a vacancy created in the leadership group, with the Catalans usually opting to name four captains for each season.

But as per the report, it appears that new manager Hansi Flick has designated five captains for the 2024/25 campaign with there being a surprise inclusion on the list.

Pedri, Raphinha now captains

With Roberto moving on, Marc-Andre ter Stegen took over the spot of the first captain at Barcelona this season.

Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong, who were third and fourth captains, respectively, last season moved up a rung to become the second and third skippers.

Reports over the past few weeks suggested that Robert Lewandowski would be the fourth captain of the team.

After all, the veteran striker, at 36, is the oldest and most experienced player at the club currently. And the fact that he donned the captain’s armband at times during pre-season, coupled with his relationship with Flick, also suggested he would be the natural pick.

However, Lewandowski has not been named one of the captains. Instead, it is star winger Raphinha 21-year-old midfield sensation Pedri who have been voted the fourth and the fifth captains, respectively.

Pedri, despite his young age, is one of Barcelona’s most important players and is a very well-respected member in the dressing room. His name had always been in contention for the captaincy and he has been made the fourth skipper.

Raphinha’s selection comes as a bit of a surprise considering that the Brazilian has been constantly linked with an exit this summer and was not really seen as a contender for the role.

But it is a deserved selection given that the Brazilian has been delivering on the field for Barcelona in the two years that he has been at the club.
