Frenkie de Jong’s never-ending problems with his ankle have become a cause for concern at Barcelona, who are worried about his fitness heading into the new season.

De Jong’s struggles with his ankle have also put his future at the club under the microscope. A more immediate problem for Barça will be the upcoming pre-season campaign, where de Jong’s absence could leave a gaping hole in the team’s midfield.

Potential alternatives for Barcelona

Fortunately for Barcelona, they have no shortage of alternatives when it comes to replacing de Jong in the middle of the park.

The most obvious one is Ilkay Gundogan, who can operate in Hansi Flick’s double pivot, in the absence of Frenkie de Jong.

Barcelona, though, have a few creative options at their disposal, including Andreas Christensen. The Dane operated at number six for a chunk of last season and could be an option if required.

Gundogan and Christensen are not the only first-team stars who can replace de Jong in the double pivot. Barcelona also have the young duo of Pedri and Gavi, though both players are more comfortable operating in a more advanced role, while the latter is still injured and unavailable.

Marc Casado is another option for coach Hansi Flick. The youngster has recently extended his contract and de Jong’s absence could pose an excellent opportunity for the Spaniard to prove his mettle during the upcoming pre-season.

Other options for Barcelona include Sergi Roberto and Oriol Romeu, though both players are likely to leave the club this summer.

Roberto was close to renewing his contract at Camp Nou a few months ago but the veteran is closing in on an exit. Romeu, meanwhile, could return to his former club Girona.

Finally, Barcelona have a few options in the youth department, including the talented Marc Bernal. The young midfielder has reached a total agreement over a new contract and will be a part of the pre-season.
