Barcelona’s biggest disappointment from the recently concluded summer transfer window was undoubtedly their failure to sign top target Nico Williams.

In hindsight, Dani Olmo’s arrival was indeed more important, especially given the idea of Hansi Flick’s system that the world has now.

The Athletic Club winger’s services, however, would have undoubtedly given the Catalans an edge especially given that the team lacks a natural left-wing option.

Story not over

Barcelona fought to no end towards the end of the transfer window to secure Williams’ signing, even repeatedly insisting that the door would not open once more.

According to reports from The Daily Briefing, however, the Nico Williams to Barcelona saga is far from done and could resurface later.

Joan Laporta and Co. are still interested in roping in the Spanish phenom and believe that a deal did not go through last summer because of a combination of financial hurdles and the player’s personal preferences.

Barcelona, for starters, were far from as economically stable to shell out Williams’ entire release clause. Moreover, the Athletic Club forward wished to play in Europe for his childhood club with his brother.

The story could be different next summer. Barcelona will again be an option for the winger while Chelsea and Arsenal could also be in the mix after having made enquiries for him in the summer gone by. Aston Villa too were believed to have even made an offer for the winger.

With Barcelona likely to improve their financial situation by next summer through a combination of sponsorship deals and the sale of Barça Vision stakes, they could be well equipped to shell out even his improved release clause.
