This comes after Argentina bested England, to book their place in the final of the 2026 World Cup.

Lionel Messi, almost inevitably, proved himself the star of the show, laying on a pair of assists to turn a 1-0 Albiceleste deficit into a 2-1 advantage.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, as a result, is primed to play his part in a record-equalling third World Cup finale of his storied career.

And waiting for Messi and the rest of Lionel Scaloni’s squad in New York will be none other than European champions Spain.

La Roja made short work of France on Tuesday night, to keep alive their own hopes of marching all the way to glory in North America this summer.

Amongst a host of other stories, this means that Barcelona’s past and present – Lamine Yamal – will go face to face with the club’s past and greatest-ever player – Messi – in the biggest fixture in international football on Sunday.
