Even as FC Barcelona wait to return to the renovated Spotify Camp Nou, the stadium is already being presented as an option to host big events in the future.
As has already been reported, the stadium is under consideration for the 2030 FIFA World Cup final. Now, the Camp Nou appears to be in contention to host another huge blockbuster match.
Indeed, UEFA has confirmed that Barcelona’s Spotify Camp Nou is one of the options to host the 2029 Champions League final, along with the iconic Wembley Stadium in England.
Following the passing of the deadline for submitting bids, Spain and England have emerged as direct competitors to host the biggest game in European club football in 2029.
Wembley, without a doubt, is one of the most iconic stadiums in the world, with a rich history, tradition, and equipped with modern infrastructure.
Competing with the stadium in London will be Barcelona’s grand coliseum, set to be reopened to the fans soon after a makeover that has kept them away from the stadium for more than two years now.
The renovated Spotify Camp Nou will come with an increased capacity and state-of-the-art facilities, which will further enhance its status as one of the most special football stadiums.
Wembley has hosted UCL finals in 1962/63, 1967/68, 1970/71, 1977/78, 1991/92, 2010/11 – both occasions when Barcelona won, and most recently in 2023/24 when Real Madrid lifted the trophy.
As for Camp Nou, it has been home to the CL finals twice in the past – in the 1988/89 season and ten years later in 1998/99, when Manchester United beat Bayern Munich in one of the most historic finals.
It will be interesting to see whether the Spotify Camp Nou gets the right to host the showpiece event for a third time in 2029.
