Barnsley have confirmed the return of Daniel Stendel as head coach for next season.

The Tykes began the season with Conor Hourihane for the 2025/26 season after having previously been interim coach for the second half of the previous campaign.

Despite a promising start with Hourihane being named Manager of the Month for November, Barnsley's results tapered off and the team finished 15th in League One. Back in April, the club agreed to part ways with the former Republic of Ireland midfielder at the end of the season with a year still remaining on his contract.

Now the club have announced Hourihane's successor with Daniel Stendel returning to the role after having overseen the 2018/19 campaign before being sacked early into the following season.

"I am absolutely delighted to be back at Barnsley Football Club," the German, who has most recently been in charge of Hannover 96's B team, said about his return to Oakwell.

"This is a place that means a great deal to me, and I’m really looking forward to reconnecting with old friends while also getting to know new faces around the Club and in the town. I can’t wait to get back to work and start this next chapter together."
