Barnsley have joined fellow League One side Bolton Wanderers in the race for Blackburn Rovers striker Niall Ennis, as reported by Alan Nixon.

The Tykes are in a very similar situation to that of the Trotters, as they were both looking to seal promotion to the Championship last season.

However, Barnsley beat Bolton in the semi-finals, but then found themselves on the wrong end of the result in the play-off final.

That has meant both sides have returned to League One action this season, looking to go one step further.

Despite losing manager Michael Duff in the summer, Barnsley have once again been a strong force in the division, as they currently sit in fifth place on 52 points, five behind second-place Bolton and three ahead of seventh-place Stevenage.

So, given they will want to remain in those play-off spots come the end of the season, the Yorkshire side may be looking to strengthen their side before the 11 p.m. deadline, and Ennis seems like a potential target.

Blackburn striker Niall Ennis has struggled since moving to Ewood Park, so it came as no surprise to see the forward being linked with a possible exit this month.

The Bolton News, that the Trotters have held an interest in the striker, but haven’t been able to reach an agreement.

In fact, it was reported by Alan Nixon via his Patreon account, that Bolton and Blackburn have been unable to reach an agreement on a deal, with Rovers keen to secure a £500,000 fee on the player.

That has put the deal on hold between the two clubs, and it seems Bolton have moved on to other targets, as they close in on a deal for Aaron Collins.

That has opened the door for other teams interested in Ennis, with Nixon reporting that Barnsley have now joined the race.

The report states that the Tykes have been interested in the striker before, during his time at Plymouth Argyle, and they have now returned to start a pursuit once again.

Niall Ennis joined the Lancashire outfit in the summer transfer window on a free transfer after leaving Plymouth.

The move came after the 24-year-old was a vital member of the Pilgrims squad that was promoted from League One last season.

The striker scored 12 goals in 38 league appearances, a tally that seemingly caught the attention of Blackburn.

But his move to Ewood Park hasn’t worked out for the best, as the forward has started just three of the 11 games he’s played in the Championship and has yet to grab a goal.

While the forward has also failed to appear in the club’s recent FA Cup games against Cambridge United and Wrexham.

It is clear that the forward has struggled since joining Blackburn, and at this moment in time, he isn’t fancied by the manager.

Therefore, it would be silly for the club to keep hold of him and sit him on the bench for the remainder of the campaign.

Rovers need to let Ennis leave, even if it is just on loan, and let the striker get back to playing and scoring goals, something he would do in League One and with this Barnsley team.
