Barnsley are looking to sign Brighton youngster Caylan Vickers ahead of competition from clubs in the EFL.
Barnsley are looking to sign Brighton attacker Caylan Vickers on loan, although there is competition for his signature.
The Tykes are preparing for their first full season under Conor Hourihane, with the former player trying to build a team that can compete for promotion after their underwhelming previous campaign.
Hourihane has wasted little time in making changes to the squad, with several new faces already through the door at Oakwell, including ex-Sheffield United forward David McGoldrick.
Barnsley are still keen to strengthen in the final third, though, and Football Insider has revealed they are emerging as the frontrunners to complete a deal for Vickers.
The 20-year-old came through the ranks at Reading, which included breaking into the first-team, but he moved to Brighton in 2024, although he is yet to make a senior appearance for the Premier League side.
A loan move to Mansfield was sorted in the second half of last season, with Vickers scoring twice and registering three assists with the Stags.
Now, it seems another temporary switch is on the cards, with the Football Insider update stating Barnsley are looking to bring Vickers in on loan. However, they add there is Championship interest in the player, with clubs in the second tier potentially able to offer a permanent transfer.
The fact that there is Championship interest shows that this would be a coup for Barnsley if they can convince Vickers to move to Yorkshire.
His record at Mansfield wasn’t outstanding, but that loan spell proved he has talent, and, at 20, there is plenty of room for improvement for the youngster.
Hourihane is looking to build a team that plays attractive, attacking football, and Vickers would also suit that style of play, and his ability to feature in different roles in the final third is another positive to this potential deal.
From Vickers’ perspective, the chance to join Brighton was understandably hard to turn down, but he will realise now that he is at a period in his career where he needs to be playing week in, week out, whether that’s out on loan or securing a permanent move away.
